History In 2005, Renault went on to take a historic first world title as a factory team with the rising star, Fernando Alonso despite having faced strong opposition from the McLaren Mercedes team and Kimi Raikkonen. Alonso arrived at the Brazilian Grand Prix with six race wins under his belt and just needed a podium finish to take the title and sure enough, the Spaniard did just that. With third place in a wet, dry race at Sao Paulo he became the youngest Formula 1 World Champion at the time. Two races later, at the final round of the championship at the Chinese Grand Prix, Alonso won the last race in the V10 era and with his teammate Fisichella in 4th place, the Enstone based team sealed the constructors title ahead of McLaren Mercedes. Fisichella also showed flashes of brilliance that season too with a spectacular pole position and race win at the opening round in Melbourne and despite battling reliability issues throughout the season and would take two extra podium finishes. |
